National Capital Trolley Museum
The National Capital Trolley Museum preserves and interprets the heritage of electric and interurban railways of Washington, DC and environs for the benefit of present and future generations, while supplementing its collections with significant national and international objects to enhance its interpretive programs.
The Main Hall provides several glimpses back into history, about the street car’s influence on various local communities, about the ubiquity of the street car in urban environments as portrayed in early movies, and a working model of street cars, automobiles, and pedestrians in Chevy Chase during the 1930′s. The museum exhibits several different street cars from the region and from Europe. Not all of these are the beauties they once were – some are sadly in need of attention – but they still represent a signficant segment of street car history.
The National Capital Trolley Museum is open on Saturdays and Sundays, 12:00 noon to 5:00 p.m., except for December 25 and 31 and January 1. At select times throughout the year, the Museum is also open on Thursdays and Fridays, 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Check the home page for admission costs and other information.
